OS Rugby provided an incredible start to the events calendar, delivering a memorable afternoon of sport, camaraderie and sunshine, capped off by a superb 58-32 victory for the Maroon team, who lifted the Billy Hookway Trophy in style.

After an unusually hot and dry summer left pitches across the country parched, a late August decision was made to move the fixture to a touch rugby format. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the College Estates team, however, the hallowed turf at the Doggart was presented in outstanding condition, allowing the match to begin in a touch format 'shoulders on' before progressing to a conditioned game with contact at the breakdowns. The adjustment was warmly welcomed by players on both sides and helped create an entertaining contest from start to finish.

What followed was everything OS sport is about. Played in glorious sunshine rather than the sleet and rain that traditionally seem to accompany December OS Rugby matches, the match was contested in a fantastic spirit, showcasing sportsmanship, commitment and friendship throughout. A player-led decision to create mixed-age teams proved a masterstroke, bringing together Old Stortfordians from across generations and producing a wonderful blend of experience, enthusiasm and talent.

The rugby itself was fast-paced and free-flowing, with end-to-end action and plenty of memorable scores. One of the standout moments came when Jake Shirley crossed for a stunning 90-yard try, drawing admiration from players and spectators alike. Throughout the afternoon, both teams embraced the occasion, creating a spectacle that reflected the very best of the OS community.

Among the many stories that made the day special was that of Maroon Captain Hugo Sau (GH, RPH, 15-18), who flew in from his home in the United States to ensure he could take part. Not only did he lead his side to victory, but he also maintained his remarkable 100% College kicking record.

Another player who embodied the spirit of the occasion was Jimmy Rea (NH, CH, 96-04). Equally committed to both sides, Jimmy switched shirts and allegiances throughout the afternoon and proved a huge asset wherever he played, earning the Navy Shirts Player of the Match award for his efforts.

One of the most heart-warming moments of the day came when Frank Balzebre (AH, 72-73) took to the Doggart pitch. Having attended the College as an exchange student from the United States and represented a formidable 1st XV side during his time here, Frank fulfilled a long-held ambition to return and play once again on the famous College pitches more than 50 years later.

The afternoon concluded with the presentation of the Billy Hookway Trophy to the victorious Maroon team following their 58-32 win. The trophy was generously donated by the Hookway family in memory of Billy Hookway (HH, 00-02), a much-loved member of the legendary unbeaten 2001 College 1st XV and a cherished friend to many across the Stortfordian community. Billy sadly passed away in August 2020 at the age of just 36, and his memory remained at the heart of the occasion.

Before the first whistle, players from both teams gathered together in a team huddle to remember Billy and reflect on the friendships, camaraderie and shared experiences that rugby creates. He was remembered once again during the post-match presentations, when the significance of competing for a trophy bearing his name was acknowledged.

The Billy Hookway Trophy serves as a fitting and enduring tribute, ensuring his connection to OS Rugby continues to inspire future generations of players. Its presentation provided a poignant reminder that OS Rugby is about far more than results, celebrating the lifelong bonds and sense of community that Billy embodied throughout his life.

The success of the event was only possible thanks to the dedication and support of so many members of the OS community. Huge thanks must go to Paul Bashford, Jake Morris, ‘Sir Alex’ Swart-Wilson and Referee Gareth Schreuder whose hard work behind the scenes ensured the fixture could take place. Gratitude also to OS President Nick Reynolds (HH, 08-12) for presenting the coveted prizes alongside extra special guest Frank Balzebre.

Most importantly, thank you to every player who gave up their weekend to pull on an OS shirt. We know how valuable free time is, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who chose to spend the day with us. From transatlantic journeys to last-minute squad additions, your enthusiasm and commitment helped create a truly special occasion.

The return of OS Rugby was nothing short of outstanding. With mixed generations, enduring friendships, new connections and some excellent rugby on display, it was a fitting celebration of the OS spirit and a fantastic way to begin the year.

Congratulations once again to the Maroon team on lifting the Billy Hookway Trophy and to everyone who made the day such a memorable success.
