Fifty years may have passed since the Classes of 1975, 1976 and 1977 last called Bishop’s Stortford College home, but as guests gathered for their 50th Anniversary Reunion, it quickly became clear that the friendships, memories and connections forged here have stood the test of time.
Bathed in glorious autumn sunshine, the College was delighted to welcome back former pupils and staff for a truly special celebration. Guests travelled from across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, while others crossed the Atlantic to be part of the occasion. For some, it marked their first return to the College in half a century, making the day all the more meaningful.
The atmosphere throughout was one of warmth, laughter and rediscovery as old friends reunited, stories were shared and familiar faces were recognised once again. There was a genuine sense of joy in hearing where life's journeys had taken members of this remarkable cohort since they last walked the corridors as pupils.
The day provided an opportunity to revisit cherished places and explore the many developments that have shaped the College in recent decades. Guided tours of Houses, College landmarks and the beautiful grounds prompted countless memories and conversations, while guests were particularly delighted to be among the very first Old Stortfordians to see the stunning transformation of Grimwade House into the College’s new Sixth Form Centre.
One of the afternoon’s most memorable moments was the unveiling of the newly restored Tomb of Francesco sculpture outside the Library. Created by artist Keir Smith and on long-term loan to the College since 2000, the striking work has recently undergone renovation. In a fitting and generous gesture, the sculpture was rededicated by Clare Rowe, daughter of former Headmaster Peter Rowe, who announced her intention to gift the sculpture permanently to the College, ensuring its place at the heart of the campus for generations to come.
Guests then enjoyed a sparkling reception before gathering in the Library for a delicious three-course lunch. During the event, Head of the Prep School, Rachael Cox, offered a warm welcome and reflected on the enduring impact of the College community, paying special tribute to a number of highly respected former members of staff in attendance.
Among those warmly welcomed back were Bernie Cotton, renowned Geography Master, House Tutor, coach and international hockey captain; Garry Hudson, whose four decades of service included roles as Head of Languages and Housemaster of Alliott House; Bob and Inger Kisby, remembered with enormous affection by generations of Young House pupils and rugby players alike; and Chris Woodhouse, whose distinguished career spanned more than forty years as teacher, Housemaster, Deputy Head and Head of Boarding.
Their presence served as a powerful reminder of the lasting relationships that define the Stortfordian experience and the profound influence of those who dedicate their careers to shaping young lives.
As conversations flowed and memories resurfaced, guests reflected not only on their own time at the College but also on the thriving school they helped to shape. It was a pleasure to share the campus, showcasing both the familiar sights that sparked nostalgia and the exciting developments that are carrying the College forward.
Above all, the reunion was a celebration of friendship, community and belonging. Fifty years on, the spirit of these year groups remains as strong as ever, and the day provided the perfect opportunity to honour a shared past while creating a few more treasured memories for the future.
It was, in every sense, a golden occasion.
