OS Hockey Sixes Team Retain the Nunn Hockey Trophy in Dramatic Style

The Old Stortfordians produced a superb championship-winning performance at the Haileybury Sixes, successfully defending their Alumni Sixes title and bringing the Nunn Trophy home once again.

Facing four back-to-back matches in warm and humid conditions, the OS squad demonstrated exceptional skill, determination and teamwork throughout the day. The group stages saw the team make a flying start with impressive victories over Sherborne (2-0), Aldenham (3-0) and St Edward's (2-0). Their only setback came against the hosts, Haileybury, who fresh from a rest break, secured a 4-2 win to top the group. Nevertheless, the OS finished second and confidently progressed to the knockout stages.

With a place in the final at stake, the semi-final against St Edward's delivered high drama. In a breathless end-to-end contest, the sides could not be separated at full time, ending 2-2. The match moved into golden goal extra time, where the OS dug deep and found the decisive winner to book their place in the final.

Awaiting them was a familiar opponent. The final brought a repeat of the 2025 decider, as the OS and Haileybury met once again with the Nunn Trophy on the line.

Haileybury raced into a 2-0 lead, but the OS showed the resilience that had carried them through the day. They fought their way back into the match and, with time running out, produced a stunning equaliser to make it 3-3, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Stortfordian supporters and setting the stage for another golden goal showdown.

For the second time that day, the OS faced golden goal extra time.

For the second time that day, they rose to the occasion.

Summoning one final burst of energy, the team struck first in extra time to seal a remarkable victory and ensure that the Nunn Trophy remains in Old Stortfordian hands for the third time in the last four years.

The achievement was made all the more impressive given the challenging  humid conditions and relentless schedule. Throughout the tournament, the squad's talents, resilience and togetherness shone through, inspiring supporters and keeping spectators on the edge of their seats.

The occasion was enhanced by a record OS following, whose enthusiastic support helped create a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day. Among the travelling supporters was even the team's unofficial lucky charm, Nellie the dog, who played her part in cheering the team on to success.

A huge thank you goes to our phenomenal players for their outstanding commitment and representation of the Old Stortfordian community, as well as to the referees for their excellent officiating and to Haileybury for hosting such a superb tournament.

Congratulations to the 2026 Haileybury Sixes champions:

Jamie Brooks (PP, GH, CH, 05-19) – Captain
