There was a wonderful sense of joy, pride and nostalgia as Robert Pearce House warmly welcomed back Old Stortfordians spanning 25 years of RPH life. Gathered in the house they once called home, a celebration of the extraordinary legacy of Richard and Sharon Honey as they prepare to retire at the end of the summer term.
After 25 years of dedicated service to RPH and an impressive 32 years of Richard’s inspiring contribution to the College’s Art Department, the reunion brought together generations of the House community. From some of the earliest cohorts under the Honeys’ care to the most recent leavers, guests representing almost every year returned to honour two figures who have shaped so many lives.
A day rich in gratitude, laughter, and shared memories unfolded through a relaxed open-house reception, complete with a traditional house photograph and a steady stream of stories spanning decades, each one reflecting the unmistakable bonds of the RPH community. Hugs and handshakes were plentiful, and the joy of reconnecting was evident on every face.
Old Stortfordians, alongside past and present colleagues, travelled from near, far and even internationally to be part of the celebration. Friendship groups reunited with ease, slipping seamlessly back into the rhythms of RPH life. Many brought partners to share in the stories they have long told of the “House on the Hill,” and some even introduced their children to a place so central to their own formative years.
In a touching testament to the esteem in which Richard and Sharon are held, even parents of OS returned to express their gratitude, eager to thank the Honeys for the care, guidance and support they gave their children during their time in the House.
Current RPH pupils played an important role in the occasion, generously giving up their Saturday afternoon to welcome guests and showcase the modern House. For many returning OS, the evolution of RPH, particularly the ensuite bedrooms, sparked both admiration and more than a little good-natured envy among those who boarded before 2015!
During the afternoon, the Head spoke warmly about Richard and Sharon’s lasting impact, not only through their pastoral leadership but also Richard’s role in shaping the physical and creative fabric of the College. From the striking Art Block to the rebuilt RPH following the devastating 2015 fire, his influence is woven into the very structures that define the campus today.
The atmosphere throughout the day was one of celebration and appreciation. A highlight came in the form of a surprise musical performance from OS Bryan Chung (RPH,10–15), now a professional musician and teacher at Leeds Conservatoire, whose outstanding guitar playing brought an extra touch of magic to the occasion.
As the afternoon turned into evening, it was clear that guests were reluctant for the reunion to end, always a sure sign of a truly successful gathering. Many chose to continue the celebrations in Bishop’s Stortford’s local pubs, extending the spirit of the day well into the summer evening.
This memorable reunion was a fitting tribute to two individuals whose dedication, warmth and leadership have left an indelible mark on RPH and the wider College community.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us in raising a toast to Mr and Mrs Honey. Your presence made this already special occasion truly extraordinary.
