It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Latham FRCO ARCM, former Director of Music at the College. Richard retired at the end of the Summer Term in 1997 after an extraordinary 21 years of service, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate throughout the Stortfordian community.

Richard was widely admired for his exceptional musicianship, infectious enthusiasm, and warm personality. His energy and dedication were evident in every aspect of his work, from conducting large-scale concerts in Knightsbridge with his Festival Choir at St Paul's Knightsbridge, to examining nearly 1,000 Associated Board candidates during a single summer spent in Hong Kong. His tireless commitment to music education inspired countless students and colleagues across the decades.

Those who knew Richard will remember his sharp wit and sense of humour, which brought joy to the Music Department and beyond. He had an uncanny ability to identify even the most obscure pieces of music from the briefest excerpt—a skill that became the basis for many light-hearted music department games. His rehearsal manner and genial nature consistently brought out the best in others, creating an environment that was both welcoming and inspiring.

Above all, Richard was a loyal friend to many within the College. His influence extended far beyond the concert hall, and his presence enriched the lives of all who had the privilege to work with him. He will be deeply missed by former colleagues, students, and the wider College community.
