Under blazing sunshine and with a palpable sense of anticipation, the College community gathered on Sunday 21 June for a truly special occasion: an OS Invitational Hockey Match to celebrate the extraordinary career of Charlie Bannister ahead of his retirement at the end of this academic year. After an incredible 48 years of dedicated service, it was a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy is etched not only into the history of College sport, but into the lives of generations of hockey players.

Hockey has always been at the heart of Charlie’s time at the College. For 44 years, he has led and inspired the 1st XI, shaping young players with his expertise, passion, and unwavering commitment. It was therefore only right that his retirement celebrations revolved around the game he has given so much to and that he invited back those who have been part of that journey. Former 1st XI players spanning more than four decades, classes from 1986 through to 2026, returned in force, joined by fellow Old Stortfordians, family members, colleagues, and friends. Many came not only to play, but to watch, reminisce, and honour a beloved coach who has meant so much to so many.

The event itself was nothing short of spectacular, both on and off the astro. With temperatures soaring well above 30 degrees, it was truly a “scorcher” in every sense. Despite the heat, players delivered an outstanding, high-energy contest, with end-to-end action reflective of the standard Charlie has instilled in his teams over the years. Adding a particularly special touch, both of Charlie’s sons took to the pitch, on opposing sides, much to the delight of the crowd.

Partners, children and parents joined in large numbers, a powerful testament to the high regard in which Charlie is held across generations. Conversations drifted fondly back to earlier days, long before the astro, when matches were fought out on grass pitches, and to the countless memories made under Charlie’s guidance.

The match itself was a thrilling affair, decided in dramatic fashion. A final, decisive save secured a 4–3 victory for the Whites, but as many acknowledged, there was never meant to be a single winner. The true triumph was College hockey itself, and the enduring impact of Charlie’s 44 years of coaching excellence.

In a moment of lasting significance, it was announced at the close of play that, in recognition of Charlie’s exceptional contribution, Astro 1 will henceforth be named Bannister Astro 1 - a permanent tribute for future generations of Stortfordian hockey players. The announcement, made by the Director of Sport, highlighted not only Charlie’s remarkable service but also his influence on the sport beyond the College. An accomplished player and nationally recognised coach, Charlie has served as a past England U16 coach, guided Cambridge Hockey Club Men’s Blues to national league promotion, and played a central role at Bishop’s Stortford Hockey Club, where he was honoured as Coach of the Year during their centenary season.

Following the match, guests gathered at the Doggart for a relaxed and joyous hog roast and drinks reception. It was the perfect setting to share stories, of team talks, unforgettable fixtures, tours, and the legendary coach journeys that have become part of College folklore. In his speech, the Headmaster paid tribute to Charlie’s extraordinary contribution, praising not only his development of outstanding hockey players, but also his mentorship of colleagues, particularly those new to the College.

The spirit of Charlie’s generosity and determination shone through in recollections of past tours, including one unforgettable trip in the Netherlands where, determined to keep costs accessible, 28 boys found themselves assembling bunk beds in a single youth hostel dormitory, affectionately remembered as “The Sleep Well!” It was just one of many stories that captured Charlie’s relentless commitment to creating accessible opportunities for every player.

In his own remarks, Charlie spoke with characteristic humility, expressing his gratitude to all who had returned for the day. He reflected on the calibre of players present, many from unbeaten College sides, and shared stories of memorable successes, including a remarkable run of victories over Cambridge Blues and a triumphant Dutch tour that left hosts less than impressed after defeat. Above all, he spoke of the pride and joy he has taken in being part of what many may see as “just a school hockey team,” but which has consistently achieved far beyond expectation.

As a community, there is immense gratitude for the countless hours, evenings and Saturdays Charlie has devoted to College hockey, nurturing not only skilled players but confident, resilient young people. His influence will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.

And in one final piece of welcome news, there was a resounding cheer when it was confirmed that Charlie has agreed to remain for at least one more season as coach of the 1st XI. A fitting continuation for a legacy that is far from finished.

The OS Invitational Match will stand as yet another wonderful College hockey memory, an afternoon of camaraderie, competition, and heartfelt appreciation, celebrating a truly exceptional career and a man who has given so much to College life.
